SnapCheck Privacy Policy

SnapCheck helps users assess factual claims they intentionally select on a webpage. This Privacy Policy explains what information SnapCheck processes, why it processes it, and the choices available to you.

1. Information SnapCheck processes

Selected claim text

SnapCheck processes only the text that you actively select and submit for fact-checking. It does not automatically collect your full browsing history or the complete contents of webpages you visit.

Google account information

If you choose “Sign in with Google,” SnapCheck receives and stores your Google account identifier, email address, display name, and profile picture when provided by Google. SnapCheck uses this information to create and maintain your account, authenticate you, show your account details in the extension, and apply daily usage limits.

Authentication and session information

The extension stores its signed-in session locally in Chrome storage, including access and refresh tokens and the account details needed to keep you signed in. Signing out removes the local session and asks the backend to revoke the refresh token.

The backend stores a hash of refresh tokens rather than the raw refresh token. Refresh tokens have a 30-day expiry period.

Usage, diagnostic, and analysis data

For each analysis, SnapCheck records operational information such as a hash of the submitted claim, the result category, processing time, pipeline stage or error information, and the associated internal account ID. It also stores daily usage counts to enforce account limits.

SnapCheck may store a semantic representation of a claim and an analysis result in a short-lived cache to improve performance. Cache entries are treated as expired after 24 hours.

2. How SnapCheck uses information

• Authenticate you and maintain your signed-in session;
• Analyze the claim you selected;
• Find and assess relevant public sources;
• Generate and display an analysis result, explanation, and source links;
• Apply usage limits, prevent abuse, troubleshoot errors, and improve reliability; and
• Maintain the security and operation of the service.

3. Service providers and data sharing

To provide fact-checking, SnapCheck may send the selected claim, a derived search query, and relevant source material to:

• Google, for Google Sign-In and account authentication;
• OpenRouter, for language-model processing used to normalize claims, generate search queries when needed, and synthesize an analysis;
• Serper, for web-search queries; and
• Public websites and news sources, whose pages may be retrieved as evidence for an analysis.

These providers process information under their own privacy policies. Do not submit sensitive personal, financial, health, or confidential information for analysis.

SnapCheck does not sell personal information.

4. Storage and retention

• Local extension session data remains in Chrome storage until you sign out, clear extension or browser data, or the extension clears an invalid session.
• A report opened in the extension is stored in extension session storage for the current browser session.
• Refresh-token hashes expire after 30 days.
• Semantic-cache entries are treated as expired after 24 hours.
• Account records, usage records, and operational logs do not currently have a published automatic deletion schedule and may be retained as needed to operate, secure, troubleshoot, and comply with applicable obligations.

5. Your choices and deletion requests

You may sign out at any time from the SnapCheck account page. Signing out clears the extension’s local session and requests revocation of the server-side refresh token.

There is currently no self-service account-deletion feature. To request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account information, contact us at aetherio.dev@gmail.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.

6. Security

SnapCheck uses HTTPS for its production API and applies reasonable measures intended to protect information. No system can guarantee absolute security.

7. Children

SnapCheck is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

8. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as SnapCheck changes. The effective date at the top indicates the latest version.
